Tangier was settled off the coast of Virginia is 1686. It has been a relatively isolated island. Change comes slow, and the people there still speak much as they did in 1686. Most of the people’s surnames also come from the United Kingdom.
The island and the dialect used to fascinate linguists who come and study it. Bridges were built in the 1930s to connect the island with the mainland United States, but before that the only way to cross was by boat. This is what allowed the island to remain pretty isolated for a couple hundred years. Interestingly, there is a large number of stray cats on the island, too.
