A contentious issue today, the word abortion has been traced back to 1547. The word took on more frequent use as the verb abort after the beginning, in 1957, of the race for space. The most famous mission to the moon to be aborted in mid-flight was Apollo 13 in April 1970. By great good luck, all three astronauts returned safely to Earth. Their voyage was later immortalized by Hollywood in Ron Howard’s 1995 film, Apollo 13.
